The channels that carried me through a dark year — shared so you know you are not alone.
Aether & Root didn’t begin with a business plan. It began during a year when almost everything else fell away.
I lost my insurance that year — and when I finally needed support the most, therapy was simply out of reach. I couldn’t afford it. What I could afford was YouTube. So night after night, that’s where I went.
What I found there surprised me. Tarot readers speaking gently into cameras, reminding strangers that hard seasons end. Healers and teachers who lifted my spirit when I couldn’t lift it myself. Paranormal crews whose adventures kept me company through the longest nights. And people who simply made me laugh until the dark felt a little less heavy.
I was raised Methodist, and I’ve grown into someone deeply spiritual. But I want to be clear: I’m not promoting a religion, and I’d never ask anyone to follow something that doesn’t resonate with them. Take what serves you and leave the rest. These are simply the voices that kept me hopeful, kept me growing, and — more often than you’d think — kept me laughing.
If you’re walking through your own dark stretch, I share them so you know what I learned that year: you are not alone. Maybe one of these lights becomes yours, too.

Jerald “The Saxman” Dunn is an Augusta, Georgia–born gospel and jazz saxophonist who started on drums at five, found the tenor sax in sixth grade, and never let go. His music has carried him through the loss of his beloved mother, a battle with cancer, and the long road of dialysis and a kidney transplant — and he’s now at work on a neo-soul gospel jazz album called Journey Back to Life. The title isn’t a metaphor; it’s his testimony.
But here’s how I know him. We met through real estate, back when he was working for the city of Atlanta — and within one conversation I knew I’d most likely met an earth angel. Years later, I believe it even more. He’s one of the nicest, most uplifting humans I have ever met, and even through his own dark nights of the soul, he stays on a mission to lift others. Each morning, his “Seeds of Encouragement” text arrives with its own reason to keep pushing through.
